Continue readingThis report summarises the work carried out between 2009 and 2011 by the five DERREG project partners responsible for Workpackage 3:‘Environmental Capital and Sustainable Rural Development. This research has considered how European rural regions are balancing the dual needs of protecting their environmental capital and, simultaneously, promoting economic and social sustainable development through case studies in Germany, Czech Republic, Ireland and Slovenia.

This report summarises work carried out between 2009 and 2011 by the six DERREG partner institutions involved in work package 4 (WP4): ‘Capacity building, governance and knowledge systems’. The leading research question in WP4 was how to (best) arrange support for joint learning and innovation in rural grassroots development initiatives, and this is considered across case study areas in the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania and Spain.

It explores and compares the enrolment of Europe’s rural regions in international flows of mobility by focusing on case study regions in Germany, Lithuania, Sweden, Ireland and Slovenia.
